Opening address : Dr. Zoran Stančič

Deputy Director General, European Commission Directorate-General for Research

Dr. Zoran Stančič, of Slovenian nationality, graduated with a B.Sc. degree in Geodetic Engineering from the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). In 1986 he started his professional career as a research assistant at the Department of Archaeology, University of Ljubljana. From 1990 to 1992 he was a research fellow at the University of Arkansas (USA) and at the Faculty of Geodetic Engineering at the Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands). He obtained his Ph.D. in 1992 with a dissertation on the application of information systems and digital image processing of remotely sensed images in archaeology.In 1992 -1993 he was visiting lecturer at the Department of Archaeology, University of Reading (UK). In 1994 he was employed as the ‘Head of the Spatial Information Centre’ of the Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. In 1997 he worked as a research fellow at the Boston University (USA) and in 1998 as a visiting lecturer at the University of Trieste (Italy). Between 1997 and 2000 he was a visiting professor at the Department of Art and Archaeology, Université de Paris I, Sorbonne (France) and Associate Professor at the Department of Geodesy, University of Ljubljana. In 1999 - 2000 he was employed as ‘Deputy Director of the Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts’.Zoran Stančič has published seven scientific books in Slovenia and abroad and a number of scientific papers on quantitative methods in archaeology and remote sensing. From the year 2000 to 2004 he was ‘State Secretary for Science’ at the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport (Slovenia), responsible for science policy making, fund distribution and international scientific cooperation. He was also an active member and/or president of Governing boards of the University of Ljubljana, the University of Maribor, the Jozef Stefan Institute, the Institute of Information Science and the International Centre for Promotion of Enterprises. Since December 2004 he is working in the European Commission, DG Research as the Deputy Director General.

Keynote Speaker: Mr Jim Reavis

Mr Jim Reavis Executive Director, Cloud Security Alliance

For many years, Jim Reavis has worked in the information security industry as an entrepreneur, writer, speaker, technologist and business strategist. Jim's innovative thinking about emerging security trends have been published and presented widely throughout the industry and have influenced many. Jim is helping shape the future of information security as co-founder, executive director and driving force of the Cloud Security Alliance. Jim was recently named as one of the Top 10 cloud computing leaders by SearchCloudComputing.com.

Jim is the President of Reavis Consulting Group, LLC, where he advises security companies, large enterprises and other organizations on the implications of new trends such as Cloud and how to take advantage of them.

Keynote Speaker: Gerold Huebner

Chief Product Security Officer, SAP AG

Gerold Huebner holds the position „Chief Product Security Officer“ at SAP AG. He’s based at the companies’ headquarter in Walldorf, Germany. In this role Mr. Huebner has the overall strategic responsibility for privacy and security for SAP’s products. Before entering SAP mid 2011, Mr. Huebner had worked for Microsoft for 11 years, last in the role of a Government Security Director, reporting to the Trustworthy Computing security and privacy competence center of the company in Redmond. Before that, Gerold worked for the Ministry of the Interior in Stuttgart , Germany, as a privacy officer. Mr. Huebner currently is also engaged as a member of the ENISA (European Network and Security Agency) Permanent Stakeholder Group. He holds a degree in legal science and has specialized throughout his career on all matters related to privacy and security.

Keynote Speaker - Dr. Steve Purser

ENISA - Head of the Technical Department

Steve Purser was born in the UK and attended the universities of Bristol and East Anglia where he obtained a BSc. in Chemistry and a PhD in Chemical Physics respectively. He started work in 1985 in the area of software development, subsequently progressing to project management and consultancy roles. From 1993 to 2008, he occupied the role of Information Security Manager for a number of companies in the financial sector. He joined ENISA in December 2008 as Head of the Technical Department and is currently responsible for all operational activities of ENISA.

Steve is co-founder of the 'Club de Securité des Systèmes Informatiques au Luxembourg' (CLUSSIL) and is currently the ENISA representative on the ISO SC 27 working group. He frequently publishes articles in the specialised press and is the author of 'A Practical Guide to Managing Information Security' (Artech House, 2004).

Panellist - Prof. Bart Preneel

Professor, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven , COSIC Research Group.

Prof. Bart Preneel received the Electr. Eng. and Ph.D. degrees from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium). He is a full professor in the K.U.Leuven COSIC research group which has 65 members. He has authored more than 400 scientific publications and is inventor of 3 patents. His main research interests are cryptography and information security (e.g., privacy and e-voting) and he frequently consults on these topics. Bart Preneel has participated to 30 international research projects sponsored by the European Commission, for five of these as project manager. He is president of the IACR (International Association for Cryptologic Research). He has served as program chair of 14 international conferences and he has been invited speaker at more than 70 conferences in 30 countries.

Keynote speaker : Jesús Villasante, European Commission

Head of “Trust and Security” Unit of the Information Society and Media Directorate General in the European Commission.

Jesús has a degree in Telecommunications Engineering from Madrid Polytechnic University and a Masters in Public Management from the Universite Libre de Bruxelles, Ecole de Commerce Solvay.

He has worked for Digital Equipment Corporation where he held positions as systems engineer, project manager for manufacturing industries and software advisor for the sales and business operations. He also worked for Telefónica and for the Computers in Medicine Section of the Air Force Hospital in Madrid.

In 1986 he joined the European Commission, Information Society Directorate General. He has worked in Analysis and Preparation of Programmes and the Telematics Applications Programme. Prior to his current position he has been head of the 'e-Business" and “Software & Service Architectures and Infrastructures" Units in the Information Society Technologies Programme.

Panellist - Dr.Marc Dacier

Senior Director, Symantec Research Labs

Marc Dacier, Ph.D., is a Senior Director within Symantec Research Labs. He is in charge of the Collaborative Advanced Research Department (CARD),  part of Symantec Research Labs. His team is located in Sophia Antipolis (France), Washington D.C and Los Angeles (USA). CARD focuses on innovation and development of next-generation technologies. In addition to internal advancements, Dr. Dacier’s team collaborates on joint projects with external government agencies, universities and businesses that include both long-term studies and short range improvements that provide immediate benefit to Symantec customers across all business segments and markets.

Prior to joining Symantec, Dr. Dacier taught networking and operational computing security at Eurecom, a graduate school and research centre in communications systems and one of Europe’s most active academic research institutions, especially in the field of network and computer security. In addition to his extensive work in academia, Dr. Dacier was manager of the Global Security Analysis Lab at IBM Zurich Research Laboratory for 7 years. An internationally recognized expert in computer and network security, Dr. Dacier has served on more than 100 program committees of major security and dependability conferences and as a member of the editorial board of several technical journals.

Dr. Dacier holds a masters degree in Computer Sciences from the Université Catholique de Louvain and a PhD in Computer Sciences from the Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse.

Panelist: Prof. Dr. Milan Petković

Senior Security Scientist, Philips Research

Prof. dr. Milan Petković is a senior scientist in Philips Research in the Netherlands, where he coordinates research in the domain of information security. He also works as a part-time computer science professor at the Eindhoven University of Technology and the EiPSI institute. Milan received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from University of Twente, Netherlands. Among his research interests are information security, cyber security, and privacy protection. Milan organizes the Secure Data Management workshop series, is a member of several scientific program committees, does reviews for a number of journals and EU research framework programs and participates in related EU projects, such as TClouds (Trustworthy Cloud Computing). Milan is also an executive board member of the Trust in Digital Life initiative and a collaborator of ENISA. He has published more than 50 journal and conference papers as well as several books including a recent book on Security, Privacy and Trust in Modern Data Management. He is an active member of several standardization organizations.

Panellist - Boris Balacheff

Senior Researcher, Cloud & Security Lab, HP Labs

Boris Balacheff is a senior researcher at HP Labs in the field of computer security, specializing in the areas of trusted computing and infrastructure security technologies, and their application to cloud and mobility in the next generation enterprise. He sits on the Board of Directors of the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) and co-chairs its Certification Program Committee. Boris also works with many product divisions to help drive security technology strategy.

Boris Balacheff’s research has ranged from cryptographic algorithms and protocols to networking and computer security. He developed an expertise in smartcard technology and was the Technical Committee representative for HP on the PC/SC specification working group. He is one of the early contributors to the invention of Trusted Computing technology, and he co-authored the HPLabs’ book on this topic. He also served on the Technical Committee of the Trusted Computing Platform Alliance (TCPA) during the development of its early specifications. Boris Balacheff joined HP Labs in 1997 with a French “Diplôme d’Ingénieur” degree in applied mathematics and computer science.

Panel Chair - Mr Volmar Lotz

SAP, Head of Security & Trust Research.

Volkmar Lotz has more than 20 years experience in industrial research on Security and Software Engineering. He is heading the Security & Trust practice of SAP Research, a group of 40+ researchers investigating into applied research and innovative security solutions for modern software platforms, networked enterprises and Future Internet applications. The Security & Trust practice defines and executes SAP's security research agenda in alignment with SAP's business strategy and global research trends.

Volkmar’s current research interests include Business Process Security, Service Security, Authorisation, Security Engineering, Formal Methods and Compliance. Volkmar has published numerous scientific papers in his area of interest and is regularly serving on Programme Committees of internationally renowned conferences. He has been supervising various European projects, including large-scale integrated projects. Volkmar holds a diploma in Computer Science from the University of Kaiserslautern.
